PC Factory Function or Initial Load
Imports starting operating s/w and drivers images for new or to-be-upgraded clients.
Imported images modes of distribution:
PC Factory - multiple new hardware platforms on a separate LAN and without any operating system are loaded with the appropriate operating system and drivers by the s/w distribution module
Update PC Factory - multiple new hardware platforms on a separate LAN and without any operating system are loaded with updated operating systems and drivers by the s/w distribution module
Re-deployed Platform Upgrades - re-deployed hardware platforms on an enterprise LAN with old/out-dated operating systems are loaded with updated operating systems and drivers by the s/w distribution module

Setting Automated Standards & Policies
Typically CIO, CFO, HR VP, and Dept VPs will publish rules:
For allocations of s/w and h/w per rank and/or function
Permission for use of s/w not in the allocation catalogs.
Standards Script Generator
Guide system administrator to build the appropriate filters and rules based upon published allocation standards and permitted non-standard software thru the use of templates.
Configuration Rules Engine
Will apply rules of allocations per the permission levels described in the User Profile Directory to derive the user's appropriate software load from a subset of the available catalog.
Will apply filter rules for reporting the presence of non-standard software.

Applying Standards & Policies to User Profiles
User Profile Directory
Functional area or specific user identification, and department/function identifiers with the associated logical and physical location.
For each function or specific user, a profile permission or allocation level is assigned.
Configuration Rules Engine
Will apply rules of allocations per the permission levels described in the User Profile Directory to derive the user's appropriate software load from a subset of the available catalog.
User Profile Assignment Inventory
Catalogs the outcome of the Configuration Rules Engine as the basis for subsequent software distribution.
Provides basis of enterprise cost allocation for in-house billing systems, or for customer billing systems for Service Providers.

Importing and Exporting Management Data
Interworking with Other Management Systems
Initial build of software distribution and configuration management databases
Data-share and alarm notification with enterprise or service provider legacy management systems
Data synchronization participation across management systems (single designated source of core data)
Import/Export Parser/Mediator
Providers bi-directional handling of data with other enterprise or service provider management systems
API's, flat or de-limited files, and newer XML standards
Modes of Operations
Stand-alone Mode
Import Mode
Inventory Databases and Directory Databases (Radius)
Externally created configuration standards
Application management data
Exporting Data for External Management Systems
Inventory and Intra-billing or cost allocation systems
Alarms
Help desk views (current and standard configurations)

Managing Software and File Package Catalogs
Package Management
Maintains catalogs of past, current, and to-be-deployed s/w
Source of subsets for distributed software to user per the allocation specified in the User Profile Assignment Inventory
Complete Software Catalog contains:
New platform s/w images (either in-house or vendor shipped images) with driver or operating s/w updates
In-house or vendor applications either deployed or pending thru a development verification process (Clearcase, Team Connection)
Data files as appropriate for business operations or application controls

eSDx uses a relational database to organize and hold policy, licensing, and configuration information as well as the software packages to be distributed.
|
Integrated Database Permits:
LAN/WAN/Wireless software deployment (installed platforms, PC factory, re-deployment of assets) based upon:
user job profiles and permissions
enterprise user standards
installed hardware
'Default' Services Definitions
Communications (LAN, WAN, General Internet)
Printer(s)
Servers for e-mail and intranet home page
Monitor s/w and h/w inventories against standards assigned profiles
Manage compatibility combinations of hardware and software (printer and device drivers, memory and applications)
Emergency fast path and follow-up database synchronization
Process monitoring with positive feedback and partial re-starts as required
Exporting data as required by external management systems (help desk, inventory, billing, and security management)
